Leather Sewing Machines
Lighter weight leathers can be sewn on home machines, but the tough stuff requires commercial or industrial sewing machines. They can be tricky to set up and operate, but can't be beat for production work.

Leatherworker.net has become an international success. One problem, we and our industry are mired in a combination/confusion of Imperial/Metric/Trade measurements. This can be a problem when trying to talk about needles and threads. The following table deals primarily with twisted multifilament threads of the Nylon and Polyester varieties. Needle and Thread.htm is attached, please bring it up in your browser and save the page to disk. Needle and Thread.htm Art

When visiting a home sewing machine shop, I watched the following tip. I thought how clever it would be for people having issues with the wrong needle thread sizing. I know that many of us have charts but this is a quick and dirty method. This lady carted in with a machine, a cigar box FULL of needles, about 10-12 spools of thread, some light fabric, some heavy denim and some suede (4-5 oz). Turned out that this machine was given to her by her Mom and that she had seen her sew all these materials on it with no issue. She was constantly breaking threads and thought that the machine was the issue so this guy had already cleaned, oiled and tuned it up for her. However s…

Received the Adler 467 from Venator today and started my trouble shooting process. I can see why it's breaking thread. The hook timing is advanced too far and there is a bind in the needle bar assembly that causes the entire unit to deflect away from the hook. This not only messes up the timing, but also causes the thread to abrade on the left side of the feed dog hole. This machine is also extremely dry. All of the oil wicks are bone dry. I've soaked everything in the mean time. There was plenty of oil in the reservoir, and when I get it sewing I'll trouble shoot the oil problem. The machine itself is in good shape overall. I see no reason why it won't sew good after I …

Lately, there are a lot of new and existing members asking for assistance with leather sewing machine issues that live in other countries than the USA. Our forums are worldwide. But, many of the folks who are frequent commenters in the leather sewing machines section live in the USA, Canada and Australia. Most of the suppliers who advertise with us are in the US and Canada. We tend to think and reply in Dollars and SAE measurements, not usually in metric or Euros (with some exceptions). It would help reduce confusion in our answers if we know where in the world you live. This is important if you are asking for prices, or a supplier of parts, printed manuals, or sewin…

Recently, we have had some very interesting and technical discussions about laser cutters and 3D printers. Some discussions were under the Leather Machinery category and others were under Leather Sewing Machines. Neither is the correct place for computerized printers and laser cutters. So, we have created a new category under the Fabrication forum, labeled: 3D Printers and Lasers (click the link to go to this sub-forum). I hope that anybody using or interested in using these technologies will partake of this new resource. Not only equipment is being discussed, but also software, drawing techniques (C.A.D.), file formats and online drawing file repositories. So, …

As we welcome new members from around the World to Leatherworker.net, we moderators often have to act as controllers of some discussions. There are long standing customs that our existing members know and adhere to, but new members are not always automatically aware of. Some of the main things that need to be explained are as follows. Include your location in your profile When you setup an account, or after you've set one up, please include your location. Often times members will request information about getting parts and service. Without seeing where they are located, some answers may be completely irrelevant to those people. At least list your state/province/…

Content to be added and updated on an ongoing basis. Welcome to the Leatherworker.net Leather Sewing Machines Forum! If you are new to this forum and you are seeking information about the right type of sewing machine you'll need to sew leather, you're in the right place. Everything stated below is either my honest opinion, or the honest opinions of other members of this forum. We all have personal hands-on experience sewing a broad range of leather projects on a broad range of sewing machines. Most of us have worked our way up, trying different machines, fixing up old ones, modifying them, tricking them out, all in usually fruitless efforts to sew something they are simp…

Hello By way of introduction, I am very new to leatherworking, and to using and maintaining bootpatchers. I have cleaned up a couple of SInger 201s and use a Featherweight 222 as my every day sewing machine. So I guess I am accustomed to Singers a little. Very aware I am a debutant in this realm. I have been cleaning up an Singer 29k58 over the last few months. I have stripped it as far as I could, cleaned it, replaced parts as needed and reassembled it. I was not able to take out all of the moving mechanisms - so the shaft, shuttle driving and needle bar cams. I cleaned them as best I could from the access I could get. Having reassembled it, I hav…
