Howdy folks, I would like to y'all to take a look at this Holster Making Tutorial. This will take you step by step through making a template for any size or model Six Shooter all the way through to finished holster. The methods shown are those I have used to make lined and un-lined holsters for the last 10 years. Even if you have never made a holster, the instructions are easy to follow with text and photographs showing each and every step involved in the process. The difference between this method and others you may have seen or currently use is there is no Wet Molding involved to make a holster that fits right, tight, and out of sight. Feel free…

John Henry typed this on a typewriter for a handout because we were doing so many holster classes in Macon. (In Georgia, they like their guns!) I scanned the pages, used some OCR software and have bleeding eyes from the editing- so blame any typos on me. I'm interested to know if you folks do about the same as he did, or what you do differently? Is there anything you like about this, or disagree with? I'm asking because I have dozens of workshops like this from our archives, and if y'all really want to see them, I will post them. I tried to clean up the formatting some, but he always was a meticulous outliner. Looking through all this other stuff of his tonight was bitter…

Hi, ya'll. I just can't figure out how to get those glass smooth edges on my holsters. So far, I've been cutting, sewing, sanding edges, beveling edges, burnishing with water using a wooden post that i've got chucked onto an old motor, molding, dying, redoing edges, finishing. So, my problem is, when i do the edges the first time, i can get them looking good. I use water on the edge and use a little bit of wax on the burnishing wheel to do the edge. But, when I mold the holster, i put it into the oven to warm up and help create a stiff mold and once the holster is done drying, the edges are looking bad. So, I come back after molding and dying to try and touch up the…

[Thought that I would at least get the text instructions posted out here. I am working on getting the pictures uploaded.] I have been on this forum for quite some time. I haven't posted much but I have seen several people ask about how a holster is made. I am not a professional. I pretty much do this as a very part time hobby. I thought that I would share the steps I take to design and make a holster. This particular model is my take on several makers. It is similar to Alessi's DOJ model. It has a slightly forward cant. I owe all I have learned through careful study of existing makers and many conversations with Lou Alessi. He has been a great mentor and frie…

Someone asked about an ankle holster. I have one design that I have been making for several years that seems to go over very well in the Law Enforcement and Conceled Carry communities. So I thought I would try to show everyone how I make one. I used to make them out of neopreme but my supplier for the kind with a cloth front and back is not able to get that anymore so I have taken to using chap leather. So to get started here is a list of materials needed. 1 pc of 5 oz chap leather about 5- 1/2 X 15 inches 1 pc wool sheepskin scrap about 4-1/2 X 5-1/2 inches 2 pc of 2" x 4" Velcro Loop side 1 pc of 2" X 4" velcro hook side 1 holster designed to fit your weapon syste…

Okay folks, let's see if this rascal will upload. I ofered to draw up a pattern for a Pommel Holster and I used the 1881 Pattern for the set. Give this a look see and try it out. VERY IMPORTANT! Burn the PDF on a disc so your local print shop can print them for you. These pages are Tabloid size (11 1/2" x 17".) Tell them to set the PAGE SCALING to NONE. If they set it to "Fit to Page" the patterns will shrink! Have fun, Jim Pommel Holster Patterns.pdf The instructions on the next post.

A friend asked me to make him a right hand cross draw holster for his 4 5/8 inch Ruger Vaquero. I showed him this left hand cross draw holster I made for myself and he liked it. He wants it a less extreme cant (this one is probably 30 degrees), right hand, 2 inches shorter, in brown. I was going to use English Bridle dye. The fun part is the Civil War medallion. A long dead relative of his bought a mule right after the Civil War with this bridle. It had these US medallions om the blinders of the bridle. He got one, his brother the other side. The relative worked the mule for 30 years after the war. He wants this medallion on the front of the holster, and it will be his da…

I usually carry a knife and leather man combination when I am working outside or camping/hunting/etc. I have 2 sets one stays on the work pants the other moves depending on what I am doing. Both needed new leather so I took the leather man pattern from the Leather Crafters Journal and modified it to hold both. The scabbard is to carry a single shot pistol in a backpack, you could also carry it on a saddle but I don't have any stock so backpack only. The zipper keeps it pretty weather tight. It is based on the scabbard build in The Art of Making Leather Cases. Todd
